Now holding the Steam record for the highest peak player count of a non-valve game is PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds.
It should come as no surprise that PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds just smashed an amazing record on Steam given its growing popularity and the way the gaming community has responded to it. It is now the most played non-Valve game on Steam as of yesterday.
According to PlayerUnknown's Twitter, Battlegrounds surpassed Fallout 4, which had held the record since its first release in November 2015. Just under 10,000 more people were concurrently playing PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds than in Fallout 4 at 481,291. It has also bested Grand Theft Auto V, which is an incredible accomplishment given that Rockstar's shooter is still one of the best-selling games years after its original release.
With over 1,290,000 and 850,000 peak players, respectively, Dota 2 and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive from Valve hold the top two rankings and are unlikely to be overthrown by anything. Nevertheless, PUBG has the potential to surpass its own record with ongoing upgrades and fresh content.
PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds costs $29.99 and is now available on Steam Early Access. A complete launch was reportedly postponed until "before the end of Q4 2017," or later in the year, earlier this month. It was announced during Microsoft's E3 2017 press conference that Battlegrounds will also be arriving to Xbox One later this year as a limited-time console exclusive. It's conceivable that a PlayStation 4 version will be released eventually.
