Street Fighter 6 Modifies Chun-Li in a Covert Way

 Jul 24, 2024

The latest State of Play announcement video for Street Fighter 6 showcases a plethora of new features, but one of the series' iconic heroines receives a much-needed update in this sequel. A segment of Street Fighter fans has been asking for Chun-Li's new voice actress in Street Fighter 6 for quite some time.

Laura Bailey is a well-known voice actress who has portrayed Chun-Li in all current Street Fighter games, such as Street Fighter IV, Street Figher V, and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite. If you've ever played a video game, you should be very familiar with that name because Bailey is one of the most well-known voice actors in the business, having provided vocals for characters like Abby in The Last of Us Part II, Mary Jane Watson in Marvel's Spider-Man, Polina Petrova in Call of Duty: Vanguard, and many more.

In addition, she plays a major role in the Dungeons & Dragons television series Critical Role, which just started its third campaign in late 2018 and has an animated series on Amazon Prime that narrates the events of its first campaign.

Despite Bailey's extraordinary skill as an actor, many fans of Street Fighter have expressed a desire for an Asian voice actress to portray Chun-Li. They've finally achieved their dream, since the official Street Fighter 6 website states that Chun-Li is voiced by Jennie Kwan. Since the game has only recently been revealed, there isn't much more information about the fighter on her website, although her voice actor is clearly mentioned.

Chun-Li's new voice actor is equally as talented as Laura Bailey, although not being nearly as busy. Among Jennie Kwan's most well-known roles are those of Sayaka Nishizono from Lost Judgment and Suki from Avatar: The Last Airbender, which she played more recently. In addition, she has contributed extra voices for several projects, like Red Dead Redemption 2 and Demon Slayer, thus she is more than qualified to play Chun-Li. Even if it's just a little adjustment for the beloved character, it's still very welcomed.

At the State of Play conference in June, Street Fighter 6 was unveiled with a brand-new logo and video. Built on the same engine as Resident Evil Village and Devil May Cry 5, the game will have a new adventure mode that seems to be open world. Along with Ryu, Luke, and newcomer Jamie, Chun-Li was one of the first combatants for Street Fighter 6 to be announced.

Along with these highly anticipated games, the June State of Play included a number of headline titles for the forthcoming PlayStation VR 2 headset. With Resident Evil 4 Remake finally receiving a release date of March 2023 and Resident Evil Village receiving full PSVR2 compatibility, Capcom was especially well-represented. With titles like Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak in the works, the publisher has been having a lot of success with its recent releases, and it doesn't seem like that will be changing anytime soon.

2023 will see the release of Street Fighter 6 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
