Crackdown 3 Does Not Rank in the NPD Top 20 for Debut Month in February
Since its original release, Crackdown 3 has been one of the most anticipated games of this console generation. It was marketed as a means of showcasing the Xbox One's potential for cloud computing. After many years and what felt like several redesigns, the game was ultimately published last month to mostly negative reviews. While titles like Jump Force and Anthem managed to overcome unfavorable reviews to achieve strong sales in February, Crackdown 3 did not have as much success in its first month of release.
The February NPD figures were recently announced yesterday, as usually covered by VentureBeat, and it was expected that some of the top games will be some of the games. Even if we didn't think Crackdown 3 would win the month, its performance was much worse than we could have predicted.
There is absolutely no sign of Crackdown 3 in the top 20 for the month of February. Although it hasn't always been the case, your first assumption could be that any Xbox game included in Xbox Game Pass would not do well on the charts. The link does not appear to line up there, since games like Sea of Thieves and State of Decay 2 topped the NPD rankings in their respective months last year, even with Game Pass.
After the success that Xbox had in 2018 with the aforementioned titles as well as Forza Horizon 4, this is a huge letdown for the company, but the delay in releasing Crackdown 3 has kept the buzz around it to a minimum. The game's reviews undoubtedly did nothing to increase sales, and its first Twitch figures were almost nonexistent.
Though the previous two Crackdown games were a lot of fun, hopefully this isn't the end of the franchise. With all of the modifications over time and the extended wait, Crackdown 3 simply seemed like it would always fall short. It's conceivable that no one else could rescue the game for you if Terry Crews couldn't.
