LawBreakers by Boss Key Isn't Doing Well on PC
Is LawBreakers on the verge of death or is it just starting to reclaim some lost ground? It is important to consider this while examining the statistics for Boss Key's anti-gravity gun.
As you may remember, on August 8, LawBreakers made its PC debut to a market that seemed to be open to it. The game received a lot of publicity before to release, and most of the reviews that it received were favorable, giving it a Metacritic score of 77. After its formal debut, things also seemed to be going rather well, with a high concurrent player count of around 2000. These were obviously not the highest figures, but things might have been worse.
Sadly, things have begun to become much worse.
What was once a respectable 2000 has dropped to a pitiful high of 354 in the previous 24 hours, according to figures from Steam Charts. Actually, there are only 186 players as of this writing.
What is happening, then? Maybe it has something to do with how payments are made right now. During development, LawBreakers was originally intended to be a free-to-play game, but that changed to a retail release. It seems like it may not have been the wisest course of action, particularly in light of the fact that the game's greatest ratings were obtained during its beta testing. Even if that were the case, BossKey would not be happy to upset early adopters who paid $30 to play the game, so making it free to play might not be the wisest course of action at this time. But there have been examples before, such when Evolve was made available as a free-to-play game on Steam.
Conversely, LawBreakers current conflict can just be the consequence of showing up at the incorrect moment. Maybe Boss Key overestimated its ability to take a firm grip in a market dominated by Overwatch (and, to a lesser extent, Paladins). Furthermore, it is obvious that the game has suffered since it attempted to replicate the Overwatch loot box system but fell short of doing enough on its own to draw people away from other games.
However, even if LawBreakers is now having difficulties, it doesn't guarantee things will always remain that way—the PS4 version could possibly be doing really well at the moment. The game still has a lot of time to recover some of its lost ground, but it has to move quickly. If it didn't, it would end up in the same league as all the MMORPGs that World of Warcraft has killed over the years.
